What you’ll make

Make the Mimi, a short flared knit skirt with a wide, soft waistband and no elastic. Its simple shape has enough sweep for easy movement.

Wear the waistband high or fold it over at the hips. Finish the lower edge with a visible serged edge or a turned twin-needle hem.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Read knit grain and stretch direction before cutting.
  • Sew stretch fabric with the correct needle.
  • Join the skirt and waistband with stretch-friendly seams.
  • Mark the openings and stretch the waistband evenly to fit.
  • Finish the edge with a serger or twin-needle hem.

Fabric guidance

Use knit fabric with enough stretch for the pull-on waistband, since the skirt does not use elastic. Check the grain and direction of any printed motif before cutting.

A ballpoint or stretch needle is recommended. Without a serger, finish a straight seam with a zigzag or use another stretch-capable machine stitch.

Make it your own

The skirt is intentionally short. Add about 5 cm before cutting if you prefer more coverage, then check the length before finishing the edge.

Use coordinating serger thread as a visible finish, or turn the fabric and sew two parallel rows with a twin stretch needle.

Sizes

The skirt pattern covers sizes 34 through 56.

The video class includes a printable multi-size pattern for the Mimi skirt.
