What you’ll make
Megan is a modular children’s pattern built around a front-opening top. Make a shirt, attach the harem-style pants for overalls, or add a gathered skirt for a dress.
The top can include gathered ruffles along its front seams or be simplified without them. The skirt and pants can also be sewn as separates for a coordinated outfit.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare curved edges for woven or knit fabric.
- Reinforce the front fastening area.
- Gather and insert optional ruffles.
- Finish woven and knit necklines appropriately.
- Sew a four-step buttonhole or install snaps.
- Assemble and attach the harem-style pants.
- Make belt loops and a fabric belt.
Woven or knit fabric
Megan can be sewn in woven or knit fabric, and the class explains the different finishes each requires. The floral sample uses woven cotton; another sample uses knit fabric.
Interfacing reinforces the button or snap area. Woven curves may also need staystitching or fusible stay tape, while fraying edges can be finished with a zigzag or serger.
Make it your own
Choose ruffles or a plain front, buttons or snaps, and a joined or separate outfit. The gathered skirt can be adjusted to your preferred length.
The skirt may also be finished as a separate elastic-waist style, while the top can be hemmed and worn as a shirt.
