What you’ll make

Sew an adjustable martingale dog collar that becomes smaller when the dog pulls backward, helping prevent it from slipping over the head.

This collar has no buckle or other opening. It goes directly over the dog’s head and is then adjusted at the neck.

What you’ll learn in these classes

  • Calculate the long strap from your dog’s neck measurement or use the reference chart.
  • Choose the short strap and hardware to match the webbing width.
  • Finish nylon and fraying webbing ends appropriately.
  • Thread the straps through the rings and adjustable slider.
  • Reinforce the load-bearing seams with repeated stitching.
  • Cover plain webbing with fabric before assembling the collar.

Materials and construction choices

The demonstrated collar uses backpack-style webbing with three rings and one slider in a matching width. The rings may be D-shaped, rectangular, square or round.

For stronger seams, the class discusses topstitching or denim thread. Heavy topstitching thread is used in the needle rather than the bobbin.

Make it your own

Use decorative webbing as it is, or cover it with fabric. The second class explains how to prepare, press and stitch a fabric covering around the strap.

Choose the collar width to suit your dog, then select coordinating hardware in your preferred shape and finish.

Size and fit guide

The PDF provides adjustable neck ranges from Mini through XL:

  • Mini: 22.5–31 cm
  • XS: 27–44 cm
  • S: 31.5–49 cm
  • M: 39.5–63 cm
  • L: 47–78 cm
  • XL: 54.5–93 cm

If measuring your dog, the PDF calculates the long strap as 1.5 times the neck circumference. Because the collar does not open, confirm that it can also pass over the ears and widest part of the head.

The finished circumference may vary slightly with the hardware shape and the way the strap ends are folded and finished.

Two video classes cover the collar and its optional fabric covering. The PDF includes the materials list, strap measurements and Mini–XL reference chart.
