What you’ll make
The Llanes is a lined tote-style bag with an exterior woven from webbing, matching webbing handles and an optional magnetic closure.
The intersecting strips create a graphic surface on each side. The pattern includes a small bag and a larger version with more room for outings or beach gear.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Plan a color layout and weave horizontal and vertical strips.
- Secure, trim and finish webbing that may shift or fray.
- Join the exterior while keeping the woven design aligned.
- Create an optional boxed base and manage its bulky layers.
- Prepare and anchor a neat interior lining.
- Add webbing handles and a sew-on magnetic closure.
Fabric and supplies
Use soft, relatively thin webbing. The samples use 3 cm cotton and polypropylene webbing, while thin twill tape is another option discussed in class.
Avoid stiff, heavy webbing because several layers meet at the side seams and base. Poplin is used for the lining.
A walking or roller foot can help feed the layers. Depending on the thickness, the class uses a size 90 needle before changing to a size 100 jeans needle or a size 120 needle.
Make it your own
- Use one color or combine colors in columns, blocks or alternating strips.
- Change the over-under sequence to vary the woven pattern.
- Give each face a different design.
- Keep the base flat or box the corners for depth.
- Add an interior pocket if desired.
- Choose a sew-on magnet, visible magnetic closure, snap or no closure.
Finished sizes
- Small: approximately 22 cm wide × 23 cm high × 6 cm deep.
- Large: approximately 33 cm wide × 36 cm high × 10 cm deep.
