What you’ll make
Create a light-up Christmas village from 3 mm felt. Stitched houses, trees and a church form the winter skyline, while openings in the felt allow lights placed behind the panel to glow through the scene.
Make the complete village or a smaller half version. Fill the sky with stars and snowflakes, then add eyelets or another hanging method suited to your display.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Transfer the village design to thick felt and plan its placement.
- Follow drawn lines while maneuvering a large felt panel.
- Cut window and door openings without damaging the stitching.
- Create stars and snowflakes with decorative or straight stitches.
- Secure thread ends with textile adhesive or add interfacing.
- Finish the panel around the lights and add a hanging method.
Materials and stitching
The featured versions use 3 mm felt, which gives the panel enough body to hold its shape. Heavier thread in the needle and regular bobbin thread make the stitched lines more visible.
Interfacing is optional. Behind the windows, it can support the stitching and diffuse the light like a curtain. Textile adhesive offers another way to secure thread ends on the reverse.
Make it your own
Choose which windows and doors to open, move or omit small landscape elements, and vary the balance of stars and snowflakes. You can also overlap or zigzag two felt colors to create a contrasting sky.
For hanging, add eyelets for suction hooks or cord, or form a channel for a wooden dowel or branch. Leave enough felt above the village for your chosen finish.
Finished sizes
The full village measures approximately 55 cm wide × 34 cm high. The smaller half version measures approximately 28 cm wide × 32 cm high.
The video class includes a printable A4 pattern for the village and project information covering the verified finished sizes and materials.
