What you’ll make

Sew a soft, reversible fabric crown for birthdays and other celebrations. Its low shape and evenly sized points were designed with young children in mind.

Batting adds soft structure. A fabric-covered elastic section provides a flexible fit without the stiffer Velcro closure.

For a taller shape with a Velcro closure, see the reversible birthday crown.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Choose and trace the appropriate pattern size.
  • Position the knit grain for the required stretch.
  • Sew a fabric casing and insert the elastic.
  • Set up your machine to sew knit fabric.
  • Sew, trim, and turn the padded crown points.
  • Reinforce the elastic attachment.
  • Close the opening by machine or invisible hand stitch.

Fabric and notions

The crown uses two knit fabric pieces, batting, and elastic. Choose a different fabric for each face if you want contrasting reversible sides.

A ballpoint or jersey needle is recommended for knit fabric. A walking foot can help feed the layered fabric and batting evenly.

Make it your own

You can substitute non-stretch woven cotton for the knit fabric. It is also easier to decorate if you want to add a name or number instead of leaving the crown plain.

Combine coordinating or contrasting fabrics to give each side a different look.

Pattern sizes

The PDF provides one pattern for ages 12–24 months and another for ages 3 years and up. Trace the required size before cutting.

The video class includes the printable crown pattern in both age ranges.
