What you’ll make

Sew the Kim, an open-front, buttonless knit cardigan with long sleeves and a relaxed everyday shape. Its simple lines work in lighter, drapey knits or somewhat heavier knit fabrics.

The class demonstrates the basic cardigan and explains how to adjust its width and length after checking the fit.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Identify the grain and place knit pattern pieces correctly.
  • Use notches to align the fronts, back, neckline, and shoulders.
  • Set sleeves into open armholes before sewing the side seams.
  • Sew knits with a ballpoint or jersey needle and a walking foot.
  • Finish seams with a serger or straight and zigzag stitching.
  • Choose suitable finishes for the front edges, cuffs, and hem.

Fabric and supplies

Choose a knit fabric with the weight and drape you want. The instructor recommends a lighter fabric with more drape for this shape while also showing the cardigan in a thicker knit.

A ballpoint or jersey needle is recommended. A walking foot helps feed the knit evenly when using a standard sewing machine.

Make it your own

Shorten or lengthen the body, narrow the sleeves or side seams after fitting, and choose raw, serged, hemmed, or contrast cuff finishes where suitable for your fabric.

You can also use contrasting thread to emphasize the serged front-edge finish.

Pattern sizes

The graded pattern includes sizes 36/38, 40/42, 44/46, 48/50, and 52/54.

  • Bust: 88–126 cm across the full range.
  • Waist: 66–104 cm across the full range.
  • Hip: 92–130 cm across the full range.

The pattern is supplied in A4 and A0 formats.
