Kids’ Zip-Front Romper with a Hood and Ears

In this sewing tutorial, you’ll learn how to make an adorable romper with a front zipper and a hood with ears. The pattern includes both short- and long-sleeve options. Kids love pretending to be little animals, and we love seeing how cute they look—so everyone’s happy.

What you’ll make

Sew a children’s knit romper with a front zipper, lined hood, playful ears and fitted ankle cuffs.

The demonstrated version has short sleeves with folded hems and round bear ears. The pattern also provides long sleeves with cuffs and pointed fox ears.

Fabric stops and facings finish the zipper, while the hood lining encloses the ear seams and creates a clean edge around the face.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Read cut-on-fold, mirrored-piece and grainline markings.
  • Install a front zipper with fabric stops and facings.
  • Sew and finish stretch-knit seams.
  • Construct padded ears and insert them into the hood.
  • Join a lined hood to the neckline and zipper area.
  • Assemble the lower body, inseam and stretch ankle cuffs.

Fabric and supplies

The romper is designed for knit fabric. The samples combine solid and printed sweatshirt knits and jerseys.

You will also need a zipper and batting for the ears. Use a ballpoint or stretch needle; a serger is optional because the seam edges can be finished with a zigzag stitch.

Make it your own

Choose short or long sleeves and round bear or pointed fox ears. Finish long sleeves with cuffs in the same way as the ankle cuffs.

Position the ears higher or lower on the hood, add inner-ear appliqué, or combine a contrasting hood lining with printed and solid knits.

Pattern sizes

The included pattern covers 0–3 months through 2–3 years.
