A sweet, wearable children’s jacket
The Kai Jacket is a jacket for little ones with a comfortable silhouette and the details of a well-finished garment: a double yoke on the back, a small dart, front pockets, a button or snap closure, and elastic at the hem and cuffs.
It’s an ideal piece for playing with style without making things too complicated: it can feel sweet in a soft fabric, more casual in lightweight denim, or have a warmer look if you choose fine corduroy. The result is an easy-to-wear jacket with details that make it special.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Assemble a double yoke to achieve a clean back on the inside as well.
- Work the small yoke dart as a shaping and finishing detail.

- Use stay tape and interfacing in areas that need stability depending on the fabric.

Fabrics, stabilizers, and notions
The class sample is sewn in viyella, and the Kai Jacket also works in fabrics with some body, such as lightweight denim, canvas, fine corduroy, or baby corduroy. You can make it lighter or warmer, while keeping in mind how thicker fabric changes seam bulk and needle choice.
The project uses elastic at the hem and cuffs, with a button or snap closure at the front. You’ll also see how stabilizing choices affect the final result, including stay tape in key areas and interfacing on the placket and closure points when a finer fabric needs support.
Ways to make it your own
You can sew the Kai Jacket with the front pockets included in the pattern, or leave them off for a simpler version. Visible topstitching, decorative stitching, or a cleaner minimal finish can all shift the look of the jacket.
The back yoke is a natural place to play with color, print, or contrast, though the jacket also looks beautiful in one fabric throughout. At the neckline, you can add a small hanging loop, and for the front you can choose buttons, metal snaps, or plastic snaps depending on the child’s age, use, and style.

The Kai Jacket pattern includes sizes from 3/6 months to 6/7 years. The size chart covers approximate heights from 66 to 125 cm and includes chest, waist, and hip measurements to help you choose the size.
The class also covers sewing in smaller sizes, where sleeves, cuffs, and armholes can be narrower to handle. You’ll see alternatives designed to make the process more comfortable depending on the size you’re sewing.
