What you’ll make

Sew the Irún, a long-sleeve knit sweatshirt with a clean front and a distinctive back yoke with an inverted box pleat.

Extra-long ribbed cuffs finish the sleeves. The pattern includes cropped and standard lengths, plus a regular neckband and a taller collar.

Use a heavier fleece-backed knit for a cozy sweatshirt or a lighter jersey for a softer sweater.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Form an even inverted box pleat and align it with the back yoke.
  • Sew knit seams with a serger or another stretch finish.
  • Construct the regular neckband or shaped high collar.
  • Distribute the neckband evenly around the neckline.
  • Match each sleeve to the correct armhole using its notches.
  • Stretch and attach the ribbed cuffs evenly.
  • Hem the curved lower edge with a stretch stitch or twin needle.

Fabric choices

Supported fabrics include sweatshirt knit, French terry, jersey and fleece. Rib knit is used for the neck and cuffs in the demonstrated versions.

A soft jersey lets the back pleat fall fluidly. A firm French terry creates more structure and may need additional stitching to control the pleat.

Use a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle suited to the knit. The class also recommends a walking foot for controlled feeding.

Make it your own

  • Choose the cropped or standard-length body.
  • Finish the neckline with a regular band or high collar.
  • Topstitch the yoke seam to emphasize it and hold the seam allowance.
  • Leave the back pleat free, or stitch its edges down when firm fabric makes it stand away from the body.
  • Use twin-needle topstitching at the neckline or hem.

Pattern sizing

The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36, 38/40, 42/44, 46/48, 50/52 and 54/56.

The body chart spans a bust of 86–132 cm, waist of 64–110 cm and hips of 90–136 cm. The standard sweatshirt length ranges from 62 cm to 67 cm by size.

The video class includes downloadable Irún patterns in A4 home-print and A0 copy-shop formats, with both length and neckline options.
