Introduction to the Serger

Welcome to the first introductory serger class! We’ll explore this wonderful machine inside and out and learn how it helps us achieve professional finishes.

What you’ll make

Create a practical set of first serger samples while learning how a domestic serger trims, seams, and finishes a raw edge in one pass.

Different thread colors help identify the needle and looper threads. Correct and incorrectly tensioned samples show how tension changes the finished stitch.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Identify the main controls, thread guides, loopers, needles, presser foot, feed dogs, and blade.
  • Follow your machine’s threading guides and change colors by tying on new threads.
  • Read finished stitches and recognize tension problems.
  • Adjust stitch length, seam width, and differential feed.
  • Set up a three-thread stitch by removing the unused needle and thread.
  • Change needles and the presser foot, including using ballpoint needles for knits.
  • Manage the thread chain and perform basic cleaning and oiling.

Practice fabric and setup

Test settings on a scrap folded to match the layers in your project. The demonstrations compare how individual controls affect the result.

A knit edge may become wavy if it stretches while sewing. Practice feeding it without pulling, then test the differential feed and stitch length as needed.
