What you’ll make

Sew a compact insulated bag for a bottle, snack, drink, small container, or a few essentials for the park, beach, pool, work, or a day out.

The bag closes with a zipper and has a buckle strap. Carry it by hand or attach it to a stroller or backpack. It measures approximately 31 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 8 cm deep.

What you’ll learn in this class

Layer insulation with the lining and batting with the exterior.
Secure bulky layers before assembly.
Insert and topstitch the zipper between the fabric layers.
Shape the depth with boxed corners and angled upper edges.
Leave and close a turning opening in the lining.
Attach and reinforce the buckle strap.

Fabric and supplies

The sample uses waterproof fabric inside and out for easy cleaning, with insulation against the lining and batting behind the exterior. Cotton is another option; canvas creates more bulk.

You will also need a zipper, webbing, and a buckle that matches its width. If your fabric frays, the class shows how to overcast the edges before assembly.

Make it your own

Use one fabric throughout or choose different fabrics for the lining and exterior. Waterproof fabric simplifies cleaning, while cotton offers another workable option.

Reinforce the strap with extra stitching or a stitched box. Close the lining opening by machine or with an invisible hand stitch.
