What you’ll make

Sew a removable cover for an IKEA PYTTIG high-chair cushion or a similarly shaped pad.

The demonstrated version uses waterproof fabric and hidden snaps, making the cover easy to remove for cleaning.

If you do not have the original cushion, the class also explains how to use the same shape to sew and fill a soft insert.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut two cover pieces from the supplied pattern.
  • Keep directional prints upright.
  • Sew smooth curves and clip or trim curved edges.
  • Finish woven fabric that frays.
  • Prepare the opening and install hidden snaps.
  • Adapt the project into a filled cushion.

Fabric and materials

The sample uses coated waterproof fabric that helps prevent stains and liquids from soaking through. It also resists fraying at the cut edges.

Knit or woven fabric can also work, although fraying woven fabric should be finished with a zigzag. Choose snaps for the demonstrated closure.

The coated fabric shown in class is washable and can be ironed beneath a protective cloth. Follow the care instructions for your chosen fabric.

Make it your own

Choose the number and placement of snaps that suits your cover. For a zippered option, see the zippered pillow cover class.

You can also sew a coordinating insert from lighter fabric and cushion filling. The source page also links to the light-up cloud tutorial.

Pattern compatibility

The pattern is drafted for the IKEA PYTTIG cushion. A high chair from another brand may work if its pad has the same general shape, but compare it with the pattern before cutting.

The class includes one video lesson and a downloadable cushion-cover pattern.
