What you’ll make

The Huelva is a lined zip-around wallet with room for cards, coins and everyday essentials. The larger version also has room for a cell phone.

Inside, a folded panel organizes cards. Outside, you can add a separate pocket with either a zipper or a simple hemmed opening.

An optional fabric loop and strap let you carry the wallet by hand or around your neck, with a swivel hook connecting the strap.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Sew an exterior pocket with or without a zipper.
  • Fold and secure a layered card-slot panel.
  • Guide continuous zipper tape around corners.
  • Join the outer wallet and lining through a turning opening.
  • Finish the end of the zipper tape.
  • Make a fabric strap and add a swivel hook.

Fabric and structure

The sample combines canvas outside with lightweight poplin inside. Other woven fabrics can work when their weight and stability suit the result you want.

If you choose a lightweight outer fabric, the class suggests adding interfacing. Thin batting is another option for giving the wallet more body.

The main opening uses continuous zipper tape. A second zipper is optional for the exterior pocket.

Make it your own

Choose the small or large wallet, add card slots to one or both sides, and decide whether the exterior pocket needs a zipper.

On the large version, you can divide the exterior pocket into separate sections. Directional prints can also be positioned carefully across the pocket and wallet body.

Make a short hand strap or a longer neck strap, or omit the carrying loop and strap. The zipper end can be finished with the fabric pattern piece or a metal stop.

Two useful sizes

The pattern includes a small version for cards, coins and a few essentials, plus a larger version with room for a cell phone.

The class brings the lining, card panel, curved zipper and optional pocket into one practical accessory project. A printable A4 pattern is included.
