What you’ll make

Practice three zipper applications: a standard zipper, an invisible zipper and a decorative lace-edge zipper.

The standard zipper is demonstrated on a small pouch-style sample with fabric stops. The other samples show how installation changes when the teeth are hidden or displayed.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Recognize three useful zipper styles.
  • Select and position the appropriate presser foot.
  • Stitch straight without crowding the teeth.
  • Move the slider safely with the needle down.
  • Add fabric stops for cleaner zipper ends.
  • Topstitch so the lining avoids the zipper.
  • Finish an invisible zipper below the slider.

Tools and sample materials

The demonstrations use regular and invisible-zipper feet, plus a standard foot for the decorative zipper. An overcasting foot serves as a guide and neatens an unlined sample.

The decorative sample layers outer fabric, lining and batting or interfacing. Transparent thread is shown as an option for stitching that blends into the trim.

Make it your own

Apply these methods to pouches, pencil cases, bags or garments. Choose a standard zipper, conceal the teeth with an invisible zipper or make a decorative zipper part of the design.
