Helen Knitting Needle Bag
We love crafts! Besides sewing, many of you enjoy other creative hobbies like knitting, so here’s a tutorial for making a bag to store your knitting needles and accessories. Its backpack-style straps make it easy to carry anywhere, and it’s also convenient to hang from your chair while you knit.

What you’ll make
Make the Helen bag, a tall carrier designed to organize knitting needles and small knitting accessories.
Adjustable backpack-style straps make it comfortable to carry and also let you hang it from a chair while working.
A front pocket holds frequently used items. A small lined zipper pouch clips to the bag, keeping scissors, tapestry needles, markers and a tape measure together.
The main bag also has room for a small ball of yarn.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Sew and turn a lined zipper pouch with an attachment tab.
- Bind and secure the front pocket.
- Prepare reinforced fabric tabs for the hardware.
- Assemble and turn the lined bag.
- Reinforce backpack webbing at the seams.
- Thread adjustable straps through rings and sliders.
Fabric and hardware
The project uses exterior fabric, lining, bias tape and a zipper. Fusible interfacing is optional when more body is desired.
Backpack webbing, adjusters, rings and a carabiner complete the carrying system. Choose hardware that matches the width of its corresponding strap.
The flap may close with snaps or hook-and-loop tape.
Make it your own
Widen the main bag if you want space for more yarn. Add or omit interfacing according to the weight of your fabric and the amount of structure you prefer.
Choose snaps or hook-and-loop tape for the flap, and coordinate the pouch, binding and webbing with the main fabric.
