What you’ll make

The Heather is a roomy backpack designed to organize baby-care essentials.

The front has a removable changing pad with a waterproof inner surface. A separate waterproof zippered pocket can hold the pad or wet and soiled clothing.

A large insulated side pocket helps maintain the temperature of bottles or a thermos. The sample can hold a 1.5-liter water bottle.

Removable attachments let you carry the bag as a backpack or hang it from a stroller.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Organize and prepare layered pattern pieces.
  • Make padded, adjustable backpack straps.
  • Reinforce straps and stroller attachment points.
  • Sew a removable waterproof changing pad.
  • Construct zippered and insulated pockets.
  • Add elasticated interior compartments.
  • Assemble the exterior, lining, and main zipper.

Fabric and material choices

Choose a sturdy, durable fabric such as canvas for the exterior. Lightweight cotton or poplin works for the lining, but is not recommended for the outer bag.

The project also uses batting for structure, waterproof fabric for the changing area and front pocket, and insulating material for the side pocket.

Make it your own

  • Leave off the changing pad for a general-purpose backpack.
  • Remove the stroller straps when they are not needed.
  • Divide the interior pockets to suit what you carry.
  • Add a lining to protect the insulated pocket.

Finished size

The finished backpack measures approximately 38 cm high × 32 cm wide × 12 cm deep.

This intermediate project has many pieces and layered sections, so it rewards patience and some sewing experience. The pattern is included in home-print A4 and copy-shop A0 formats.
