What you’ll make
This thermal belt holds removable seed-filled pouches at the front and back of the body while leaving your hands free.
The envelope-style covers and center dividers keep the pouches in separate areas. Each pouch is also divided so its filling remains distributed instead of collecting at one end.
Firm webbing and an adjustable buckle connect the belt sections. Only the removable pouches are heated, keeping the covers, straps, and hardware out of the microwave.
The belt is designed to provide localized warmth around areas such as the abdomen or lower back.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Sew, turn, fill, and close a removable seed pouch.
- Divide each pouch to distribute the filling.
- Build an envelope-style cover with overlapping flaps.
- Add elastic loops to the cover.
- Sew the divider between the pocket areas.
- Attach firm webbing, a buckle, and an adjustable slider.
Fabric, filling, and hardware
A stable woven fabric supports the filled belt sections. Fleece is another option, but its stretch may allow them to sag; interfacing can add stability.
Use firm backpack-style webbing for the main strap. Elastic can stretch under the pouches’ weight, but it works well for the removable loops.
The sample pouches contain wheat and lavender. Rice and millet are also discussed, while cherry and olive pits are bulkier and conform less closely to the body.
Keep natural grain fillings dry and protected from moisture. The class also notes that insects can appear in grain over time.
Make it your own
Choose a stable woven exterior or a warmer fleece surface, adding interfacing when the fabric needs more body.
You can alter the number of elastic loops, provided they remain clear of the center divider and seams.
Adjust the strap to position the belt comfortably at the abdomen or lower back. Test the buckle and fit before securing the final end of the webbing.
Sizing
The included pattern provides three sizes. Choose the one that best suits the area you want to cover, then refine the fit with the adjustable strap.
The video demonstrates the divided seed pouches, envelope covers, elastic loops, and adjustable fastening. An A4 pattern file for the belt pieces is included.
