What you’ll make
Sew a classic girls’ pinafore dress with a bib front, adjustable shoulder straps, and a playful center bow.
Snap fasteners let you alter the strap length as a child grows or change where the dress sits. The bow ties can remain visible or be tucked away for a simpler front.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the pinafore pieces from the included pattern.
- Construct and reinforce straps for snap fasteners.
- Attach the front and back facings for a neat upper edge.
- Join and finish the side seams for your chosen fabric.
- Sew the center bow and choose a suitable hem finish.
- Test and install snaps for an adjustable fit.
Choosing your fabric
Choose a fabric with enough body to hold the pinafore’s shape. The class uses a soft sweatshirt knit and also suggests corduroy or denim for winter, and linen or a similar woven for summer.
Avoid thin knit fabric, which will not support the intended shape. Test the snap fastening on a reinforced scrap before applying it to the finished straps.
Make it your own
Use the separate pocket PDF to add one of several pocket styles, or omit the bow for a cleaner version. You can also add a strap ruffle using the Bordeaux Pinafore tutorial.
If this is your first printable sewing pattern, the PDF pattern tutorial explains how to prepare one.
Sizes included
The dress pattern includes sizes 4/5, 6/7, 8/9, and 10/11 years.
The video class includes the printable pinafore pattern and a separate PDF with pocket options.
