What you’ll make

Sew a compact, fully lined crossbody bag with a small front compartment, a larger main compartment and a separate zipper closure for each.

The finished bag measures approximately 12 cm wide, 18 cm high and 5.5 cm deep—sized for essentials such as a phone, wallet, keys, cards and earbuds.

An adjustable webbing strap lets you change the carrying length. The demonstrated finish encloses the interior seams without bias binding.

Because the bag combines a small scale, curved seams, two zippers, multiple layers and turning, it is best suited to sewists already comfortable using a sewing machine.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Install lined zippers for two separate compartments.
  • Match center marks and shape fabric strips around curved panels.
  • Control layered sections with basting and marked seam guides.
  • Turn lined sections, reduce corner bulk and close openings by hand.
  • Attach and thread an adjustable webbing strap without twisting it.

Fabric and structure

The sample uses cotton poplin with lightweight fusible interfacing applied to the exterior pieces.

Canvas can be used outside with a lighter lining. Two layers of canvas are not recommended because the added thickness makes the tight curves and turning harder to handle.

Interfacing is optional with a heavier exterior. With poplin, choose a light interfacing according to how much body you want the finished bag to have.

Make it your own

  • Feature a favorite motif on the front pocket.
  • Choose a fixed adjustable strap, as demonstrated.
  • Add D-rings and swivel hooks for interchangeable straps.
  • Use bias binding inside instead of turning the lined sections.

The video class and downloadable A4 pattern provide the pieces and guided instruction for making the lined Gala Mini Crossbody Bag.
