What you’ll make

Sew a structured fabric storage box with a lid, handles, an optional label window, and a removable inner base.

A zipper in the bottom lets the empty box collapse flat. The lid’s fastened corners also open so the lid can be stored flat.

Use the finished box for fabric, yarn, magazines, shoes, photographs, clothing, or other household items.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Install a zipper in the diagonal-opening base.
  • Build lined walls with channels for rigid inserts.
  • Make and position handles and an optional clear label window.
  • Join the base and finish the upper edge with bias tape.
  • Create a removable, fabric-covered inner base.
  • Construct a collapsible, bias-bound lid with rigid panels.

Materials and structure

The box uses exterior fabric, lining, interfacing, bias tape, a zipper, and rigid plastic panels. The class demonstrates corrugated polypropylene and another firm plastic option.

Test a sample first to confirm that your machine can feed and stitch through the selected plastic and fabric layers.

Make it your own

Make the box with or without its lid. Add fabric or webbing handles, move them to suit the storage space, and place the clear label window where it will be easiest to see.

The label window is optional, and the lid corners can be secured with hook-and-loop tape or snaps.

Finished dimensions

With the lid in place, the assembled box measures approximately 24 cm high × 28 cm wide × 38 cm long.

The class includes the video lesson and a PDF with cutting measurements and structural-panel dimensions.
