What you’ll make
Create a handmade fishing game with a simple rod and a collection of soft, stuffed sea creatures that can be caught magnetically.
The creatures can also become toys or under-the-sea room decorations after the fishing game is put away.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut and align curved toy pieces and tentacles.
- Clip or notch curves for smooth turned shapes.
- Add faces with hand or machine stitching.
- Turn and stuff each creature.
- Enclose the magnets and close the openings neatly.
- Gather and pad the magnetic end of the fishing line.
- Attach the cord securely to a wooden rod.
Use the invisible stitch tutorial for extra guidance on closing the turning openings by hand.
Fabric and materials
This project is suited to fabric scraps. You will also need stuffing, cord, a wooden stick and magnets, plus any felt, thread or fabric chosen for the faces.
For children who put objects in their mouths, use stitched fabric details instead of buttons. The lesson also stresses securely enclosing the magnets.
Make it your own
Invent more sea creatures and vary their expressions, colors and stitched details. Enlarge the supplied shapes for pillows or soft room decorations.
Reduce the shapes for appliqués on garments and accessories. Decorate one side, as demonstrated, or add faces to both sides.
