Fabric Bread Bags in Two Designs: Loaf and Baguette
Today we’ll show you how to make a fabric bag for buying and storing bread. This easy, eco-conscious tutorial helps reduce plastic use. Plus, the finished bags look beautiful and add a decorative touch to your kitchen.

What you’ll make
Sew two lined bread bags: a tall design for baguettes and a wider design for sandwich or round loaves. The baguette bag includes a shoulder strap, while the loaf bag has a short handle.
Both bags feature decorative bread appliqués. The tall version can also carry the hand-lettered message All you need is love and bread.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare layered appliqués with double-sided fusible web.
- Trace the supplied lettering and set textile marker with an iron.
- Secure appliqué edges with a tested zigzag stitch.
- Add webbing closures, handles and a shoulder strap.
- Use Kraft-Tex tabs to reinforce and finish webbing ends.
- Assemble the outer fabric and lining with a turned finish.
- Create a boxed base for the wider loaf bag.
Fabric and materials
The samples use rustic cotton muslin for the main fabric. You will also use webbing, Kraft-Tex, double-sided fusible web, appliqué scraps and a textile marker for the lettering.
If the fabric frays readily, the class shows how to finish its raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serger.
Make it your own
Change the appliqué colors, omit the lettering or add your own message. You can trace the supplied designs against a window if you do not have a light box.
Use the bags for bread or adapt them to carry other items. The decorative tabs and webbing details can also be varied.
