What you’ll make

The Eloise is a close-fitting, floor-length stretch dress with shoulder straps, a round neckline, and a simple uninterrupted silhouette.

Its few main pattern pieces and clean neckline and armhole bands make it an approachable first garment for learning to sew stretch fabric.

What you’ll learn in this class

Select a ballpoint, jersey, or stretch needle.
Choose a suitable stretch-seam finish.
Quarter the neckline and band for even distribution.
Stretch and sew bands around the neckline and armholes.
Topstitch the seam allowances so the bands lie flat.
Match notches along the long side seams.
Choose a hem for the fabric and desired length.

Fabric and materials

Use a stretch knit. The photographed samples are viscose jersey, which gives the long silhouette fluid drape and movement.

You can sew the dress on a regular machine with the correct needle and stretch-capable stitches or use an overlocker.

Make it your own

Shorten the dress after trying it on, or leave the edge unfinished if the knit does not fray. The neckline and armhole bands can be folded neatly or exposed for a casual finish.

For a sewn hem, use straight stitching, a twin needle, zigzag, or a decorative stitch suited to the fabric’s stretch.

Pattern sizing

The pattern includes six grouped sizes from 34/36 through 54/56. The chart covers busts of 86–132 cm, waists of 64–110 cm, and hips of 90–136 cm.

Finished dress length ranges from 140.5 cm in size 34/36 to 148 cm in size 54/56.

The video class includes A4 home-print and A0 copy-shop patterns and demonstrates the side seams, stretch bands, topstitching, and hem options.
