What you’ll make
Sew the Elliot, a fully lined men’s vest shaped with side panels. Optional patch pockets add practical detail, while the lining gives the garment a neat interior.
The sample uses canvas outside and lining inside. Your fabric choices can shift the vest from a casual layer to a more refined or expressive garment.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut mirrored outer and lining pieces correctly.
- Stabilize curves and diagonal edges when fabric frays or distorts.
- Sew and press the shaped panel seams smoothly.
- Prepare curved patch pockets and position them from the pattern markings.
- Join the outer vest and lining for clean armholes, neckline and edges.
- Turn and press the vest, reduce bulk at the corners and close the turning opening.
- Reinforce the closure area before sewing the buttonholes and buttons.
Fabric options
The class sample pairs a canvas outer fabric with a separate lining. Suggested lining choices include acetate lining, satin, taffeta and poplin.
Choose the needle and stabilization method for your fabric. The demonstration takes extra care around armholes, curves and diagonal edges on a fabric that frays easily.
Make it your own
- Add two patch pockets, use one or omit them for a cleaner front.
- Topstitch the panel seams with a single line or twin needle, or leave them unstitched.
- Highlight the shaped panels with a contrasting fabric.
Sizes and fit
The included pattern covers sizes 34/36 through 54/56. Its body chart spans an 82–130 cm chest, 66–114 cm waist and 78–126 cm hip.
Finished vest length ranges from 63 cm to 68 cm across the sizes. The pattern is supplied in tiled A4 and full-size A0 formats.
