An adjustable fabric cone for your pet

In this class you’ll sew the Elizabethan Collar (Pet Cone), a fabric alternative to a plastic cone for dogs, cats or other furry friends who need help avoiding a wound or sensitive area.

The design combines cushioned, breathable 3D fabric with Velcro, adjustable straps and inner elastic holders for threading through the pet’s regular collar. The finished cone is made to sit more securely, adjust within each size and hold its shape without feeling like a hard plastic piece.

What you’ll learn

  • Build a cone-shaped fabric Elizabethan collar with a neat sewn finish.
  • Work with 3D fabric and firm interfacing to support the shape when the size or fabric calls for it.
  • Finish straight and curved edges with bias binding while managing bulky layers.
  • Create an adjustable system using webbing, sliders and Velcro.
  • Add inner elastic holders so the cone can be anchored to the pet’s regular collar.
  • Make adaptation choices based on fabric type, pet size and muzzle length.

Fabrics, notions and structure

The class sample is sewn with 3D fabric on both the inside and outside, giving the cone a padded feel while helping with breathability. Firm interfacing is used in the indicated area to support the cone shape, especially in larger sizes or when the fabric needs more body.

You’ll also work with bias binding, webbing, sliders, Velcro and elastic tape. If you want to try cotton, canvas, softshell, neoprene or another fabric, the class helps you understand when stabilizer or interfacing is useful so the cone does not collapse.

Ways to adapt it

The main version adjusts with straps, sliders and Velcro, which is helpful if you have more than one pet, want extra fitting range or need a cone that can adapt over time.

There is also a simpler fixed-Velcro option for one specific pet. You can consider narrower webbing for small sizes, add an extra Velcro point at the overlap when the cone is worn very closed, and choose color combinations for the fabric, binding, straps and closures.

Sizes and fit

The pattern includes four sizes: S, M, L and XL, designed for neck circumferences from 23 to 50 cm. Size S covers 23–29 cm, M 30–36 cm, L 37–43 cm and XL 44–50 cm.

Beyond the neck measurement, the class considers how the cone may sit on flatter-faced or longer-muzzled pets. The design lets you adjust the front area to balance protection, comfort and ease of movement.

What’s included in the class

The video class guides you through the complete construction of the Elizabethan collar, including the finishes, anchor points and adjustable closure system.

Membership includes the downloadable PDF pattern in Letter/A4 home-printing format, with sizes, useful placement markings and a materials table to help you prepare the project confidently.
