What you’ll make

Sew a zippered pouch with a fabric-covered elastic band that slips around a sewing journal, notebook, binder, or book.

Clear panels keep pens, pencils, markers, and other small tools visible. The pouch stays attached to the notebook so both can travel together.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare bias tape and bind clear plastic edges.
  • Shorten a zipper and add covered stops at both ends.
  • Join the clear panels without obstructing the zipper slider.
  • Fuse interfacing between the fabric base layers.
  • Turn a narrow fabric tube and feed elastic through it.
  • Secure the covered elastic inside bound side seams.

Fabric and supplies

The demonstrated pouch combines fabric, clear plastic, single-sided fusible interfacing, bias tape, elastic, and a zipper.

Invisible thread is optional. It allows you to sew across different colors and clear panels without repeatedly changing thread.

Make it your own

Replace the clear plastic with fabric for an opaque version. You can also adjust the elastic for another notebook or omit it to make a standalone zip pouch.

If you use notebooks of very different sizes, separate pouches can keep one elastic band from becoming overstretched.

The class includes a sewing video and a downloadable PDF with verified piece measurements and cutting guidance.
