What you’ll make
Sew a hanging Advent calendar with 24 fabric pockets on a burlap base, framed with bias tape and finished with a top casing for a hanging rod.
Fabric numbers and festive motifs complete the calendar. Fill the pockets with notes, wrapped treats, or other small December surprises.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Finish the outer edges of a burlap base with bias tape.
- Batch-press and finish multiple pocket pieces.
- Apply bias tape to pocket tops in one continuous run.
- Position and secure 24 pockets before sewing.
- Prepare permanent numbered fabric appliqués.
- Sew a top casing for the hanging rod.
Materials and fabric
The demonstrated calendar uses burlap for the base, fabric for the pockets, bias tape, a hanging rod, and cord.
The numbers use printable permanent fusible material. Sewable fusible web may be substituted, but those appliqués must then be stitched in place.
Make it your own
Use one fabric for every pocket or combine several holiday prints. Arrange the numbers in order or scatter them across the calendar.
Choose bias-bound or hemmed pocket tops, then add your preferred lettering and seasonal motifs above the pockets.
If time is limited, the class also discusses attaching the pockets with permanent fabric adhesive instead of sewing them.
