Deva High-Waisted Panties

What you’ll make
The Deva pattern creates high-waisted panties with generous front and hip coverage, a gusset lining and a wide elasticized waistband that reaches the belly button.
Fold-over elastic gives the leg openings a flexible, enclosed edge. The broad self-fabric waistband contains elastic for a secure finish.
This compact project offers useful practice in sewing stretch fabric and applying elastic around curved edges.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Attach the gusset lining at the crotch seam.
- Choose stitches that stretch with the fabric.
- Divide and apply fold-over elastic evenly.
- Close knit side seams by machine or overlock.
- Sew elastic into a wide self-fabric waistband.
- Match and attach the waistband without twisting it.
Fabric and elastic
Use stretch jersey; cotton jersey with some elastane is recommended. Stretch lace is another option when it has enough elasticity for the pattern.
You will also need fold-over elastic for the leg openings and elastic tape inside the waistband.
A super-stretch needle helps prevent skipped stitches. Test the zigzag on a scrap, and use a walking foot if it helps the layers feed evenly.
Make it your own
Choose printed or solid cotton jersey, or use suitably stretchy lace for a different look. Test the stretch fabric and elastic together before sewing the garment.
