What you’ll make
Create a lined fabric pennant featuring “If you can dream it, you can sew it,” finished with fringe, a dowel channel, and hanging cord.
The fusible fabric letters can be outlined with free-motion stitching for an expressive, hand-drawn effect.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Trace lettering in reverse for fusible fabric appliqué.
- Plan the phrase around the seams and dowel channel.
- Set up a free-motion foot and tension the fabric in a hoop.
- Guide the fabric in any direction while controlling the stitches.
- Sew and turn the lined pennant.
- Form the dowel channel and attach fringe.
Fabric and materials
Use main fabric for the front and back, contrasting scraps for the letters, double-sided fusible web, fringe or another trim, a dowel, and cord.
The sample begins with two 45 x 32 cm pieces. The back can match the front or use a simpler coordinating fabric.
Make it your own
Replace the supplied phrase with a name, drawing, symbol, or personal message. Change the appliqué fabrics, thread, trim, and cord to suit its setting.
Without a free-motion foot, permanent fusible appliqués can remain unstitched on this wall hanging, or details can be added with a textile marker.
