What you’ll make

Make a lined sleep bonnet for holding curly hair while you rest. Its satin interior provides a smooth surface intended to reduce friction, static, tangling, and frizz overnight.

An elasticized edge holds the circular bonnet in place. Add the optional wrap tie for a turban-inspired bow, or leave it off for a simple gathered bonnet.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Pair an exterior fabric with a satin lining.
  • Sew and turn a circular lined piece.
  • Keep slippery layers aligned while sewing.
  • Create an even casing around the curved edge.
  • Insert elastic without twisting it.
  • Construct and attach the optional wrap tie.

Fabric and materials

Use satin for the interior. Stable poplin is the easiest exterior choice, while viscose creates a softer result but is more challenging to handle beside satin.

You will also need elastic. Test its fit around your head before joining the ends so the bonnet feels as loose or secure as you prefer.

Make it your own

Sew the tie permanently to the back, omit it, or make it removable. The class suggests using a fabric loop, snaps, or hook-and-loop tape for a detachable version.

For long or especially full hair, enlarge the circumference of the circular pattern piece to create more room inside the bonnet.

The video class includes a downloadable A4 pattern for cutting the bonnet in exterior fabric and satin.
