What you’ll make
Sew classic long-leg kids’ overalls with a roomy shape for everyday movement and play.
Cosmo includes adjustable shoulder straps, one front patch pocket, two back pockets and side openings. The sample uses overall buckles and jeans buttons at the straps, with metal snaps at the sides.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare mirrored pieces and stabilize edges that could stretch.
- Sew, turn and topstitch the straps and patch pockets.
- Create denim-style topstitching with a twin needle.
- Join the center seams, inseam and side seams.
- Interface closure areas before adding the hardware.
- Finish the legs with an inward hem or turned-up cuff.
Fabric choices
Cosmo is designed for woven fabric. Choose denim or light canvas for a sturdy pair, or use linen, double gauze or poplin for a lighter version.
Needle choice, seam finishing and topstitching depend on the fabric. Thin cloth benefits from interfacing beneath buttonholes or snaps to add body and help prevent tearing.
Make it your own
Shorten the legs for summer, omit any of the standard pockets or add cargo pockets at the sides. Follow the pattern’s pocket placement or adjust it to your preference.
At the straps, use overall buckles and jeans buttons, snaps, or a buttonhole with a knotted strap. The side openings can use snaps or buttonholes with jeans buttons.
Single topstitching gives light fabrics a simpler finish. Double topstitching and a turned-up cuff create a more traditional denim look.
Pattern sizing
The pattern covers children’s sizes 2/3 through 14/15, designed for heights from 95 to 170 cm. A4 and A0 pattern files are provided.
