What you’ll make

Sew the Coco, a children’s skort that combines built-in shorts with a two-tier ruffled skirt. An elastic waist makes it easy to pull on and comfortable for active play.

The shorts provide coverage beneath the gathered flounces. The skirt has no designated front or back, while the shorts use separate front and back pieces for shaping.

What you’ll learn in these classes

  • Assemble the front and back shorts at the rise, inseams and side seams.
  • Prepare neat hems before gathering the flounces.
  • Gather two flounce tiers evenly between the pattern markings.
  • Join the flounces to the yoke while managing several layers.
  • Combine the completed shorts and skirt sections.
  • Form the waistband casing, insert the elastic and help prevent it from twisting.
  • Adapt the pattern for shorts without the skirt.

Fabric options

The samples use a linen-viscose blend and striped seersucker. Lightweight woven fabric is recommended because several layers meet at one seam, and a finer fabric reduces bulk.

A lightweight knit can also create a sportier version. Match the needle to the fabric: the class uses a universal needle for the fine woven sample and recommends a ballpoint needle for stretch fabric.

Make it your own

Make the complete skort, use the ruffled section as a skirt or sew the shorts on their own. The classes explain how to finish the elastic waist for each option.

For shorts alone, the extra lesson shows how to raise the rise and add enough height for the chosen elastic casing. The same adjustment is made to the front and back pattern pieces.

Sizes and fit

The included pattern runs from age size 2/3 through 14/15. Its height chart covers 95–170 cm, with a 49–72 cm waist and 54–88 cm hip across the range.

The pattern is supplied in tiled A4 and full-size A0 formats.

The two-video class includes the complete skort lesson, a focused shorts-only adjustment lesson, A4 and A0 patterns, and a project-information PDF with the size chart.
