What you’ll make
Sew a relaxed, short-sleeve Bruno Polo Shirt with a collar, an open neckline placket and a clean back-yoke finish.
In a lightweight woven, the design reads as a breezy shirt. Knit or piqué gives it a sportier polo look. The buttons are optional, so the neckline can also be left open.
The demonstrated version uses a double back yoke to conceal the interior seam.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Choose suitable needles and seam finishes for woven or knit fabric.
- Stabilize curves and bias edges in a lightweight woven.
- Sew a double back yoke with an enclosed seam.
- Construct and attach the neckline placket and collar.
- Set the sleeves, close the side seams and finish the hems.
- Add buttonholes and buttons for the buttoned version.
Choosing your fabric
The sample uses lightweight linen-viscose. Linen, viscose and other light wovens create a shirt-like result, while knit or piqué gives the design a more traditional polo character.
Use a universal needle for a fine woven and a jersey-compatible needle for knit. Interfacing can make the placket and collar firmer, while using less creates a softer finish.
Make it your own
- Shorten the body or sleeves.
- Add or omit the buttons and buttonholes.
- Use one back yoke instead of two.
- Add a patch pocket to the front.
- Add decorative topstitching or use a twin needle on the sleeve hems.
Sizing and pattern details
The pattern covers sizes 34/36 through 54/56. Its chart spans a chest circumference of 82–130 cm, waist of 66–114 cm and hip circumference of 78–126 cm.
Finished shirt length ranges from 72 to 77 cm by size. Consult the body measurement chart before selecting your size.
