Kids’ Booster Cushion

This booster cushion for kids is handy in so many situations. It helps little ones reach the table to eat, play, draw, and more. Simply place it on a chair and secure it to the backrest and underneath with the buckles.

What you’ll make

Sew a portable booster cushion that raises a child at a dining chair for meals, drawing, or play. It is intended for children who can already sit independently.

Adjustable buckle straps fasten around the chair back and beneath the seat. A lightly padded back adds comfort, and the zippered cover can be removed from the foam for washing.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Reinforce lightweight fabric with interfacing.
  • Finish edges with a serger, zigzag, or overcasting stitch.
  • Sew and turn straps and attach adjustable buckles.
  • Add batting to the padded back panel.
  • Install the zipper in the center panel.
  • Match centers and corners while assembling the cover.
  • Reinforce the chair-strap attachment points.

Fabric and sewing choices

The sample combines sturdy canvas with poplin. Canvas or another heavyweight fabric is recommended; lighter poplin can be reinforced with interfacing.

Backpack webbing or bias tape can replace sewn fabric straps. Use a serger, zigzag, or an overcasting stitch and foot to finish fraying edges.

Make it your own

For easier cleanup, use waterproof fabric or coat the outer fabric with a suitable waterproofing gel. The zippered cover can be removed for washing.

Personalize the cover with a child’s name or appliqué. The source also suggests making a bag-style cover for storage and transport.

Verified dimensions

The cover is designed for a foam insert measuring 33 × 33 × 8 cm. Custom-cut foam can be ordered to fit these dimensions.

The video class includes a measured PDF for the cushion panels, chair straps, and foam insert.
