What you’ll make
Sew an unlined children’s coat with an attached hood, two-piece sleeves, and front patch pockets. The simple silhouette works with a row of buttons or a duffle-style toggle for a more cape-like look.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare fraying fabric and stabilize curved armhole edges.
- Apply patch pockets securely to the coat fronts.
- Assemble and topstitch the paneled hood and center-back seam.
- Sew two-piece sleeves and set them into the armholes.
- Join the hood neatly around the neckline of an unlined coat.
- Finish exposed interior seams and hems.
- Prepare the front for buttons and buttonholes or a toggle closure.
Fabric and supplies
Choose a warm fabric such as wool coating, bouclé, corduroy, mouflon, or softshell. A knit can create a softer, cardigan-like version.
Fraying fabrics need edge finishing. The class demonstrates serging and explains how to use a zigzag or overlock-style machine stitch when a serger is unavailable.
Make it your own
Use two patch pockets or alter their number, size, and placement. Close the coat with front buttons or a duffle-style toggle, adapting the front-edge finish to the chosen closure and fabric thickness.
