What you’ll make

Sew a long, padded crib bumper shaped like a bear, complete with a dimensional head, ears, paws, legs, and a tail.

Felt appliqués form the nose, inner ears, and paw pads, while batting and filling give the separate features and long body their sculpted shape.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Apply small felt details with neat edge stitching.
  • Layer fabric and batting for softly padded ears.
  • Assemble the shaped head and add depth to the muzzle.
  • Sew, reinforce, turn, and fill the small features.
  • Baste the limbs and tail before joining the body panels.
  • Attach the head, fill the bear, and close the turning gap.

Materials and structure

Use fabric for the body, felt for the nose, inner ears, and paw details, batting for padded features, and cushion filling.

A directional print requires a continuous length for the body. The class also demonstrates reinforced seams where extra strength may be useful.

Make it your own

Adjust the central body piece to suit a crib, mini crib, or bed. Position the paws down, outward, or straighter, and place the eyes to create the expression you prefer.

The lower body can be boxed for depth or given a rounded end. Close the final opening by machine or with an invisible hand stitch.

Finished length

The published finished length is approximately 170 cm, and the central body can be shortened or lengthened for its intended location.

The video demonstrates the appliqué, dimensional head, padded features, long body, filling, and final assembly. A downloadable bear pattern is included.
