What you’ll make
Make a comfortable batwing jacket with a fluid silhouette, gathered sleeve seams and cuffs. Choose full-length or three-quarter sleeves.
The class demonstrates the three-quarter-sleeve version in a soft knit and explains the longer option and a decorative pom-pom-trim variation.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Lay out and mark the jacket on a rectangle of fabric.
- Sew gathering stitches and adjust the fullness.
- Distribute and secure the gathers evenly.
- Insert pom-pom trim as a decorative alternative.
- Cut cuffs with the stretch in the correct direction.
- Gather each sleeve opening to fit its cuff.
- Finish the neckline with a narrow turned edge.
Fabric and equipment
Choose a knit or another non-rigid fabric with good drape. A lighter drapey fabric works for a summer version.
The demonstrated layout uses fabric 1.50 m wide and 1.10 m long. A ballpoint needle and walking foot help handle the knit and bulky layered areas.
You can finish the seams with a serger or use straight and zigzag stitches on a regular sewing machine.
Make it your own
Choose full-length or three-quarter sleeves and a plain gathered seam or decorative pom-pom trim.
The demonstrated knit can be left raw at the outer edge because it rolls without fraying. Add a hem if you prefer a more finished edge.
