What you’ll make
Make a baby romper with a bib front, an elasticized waist and leg openings, and snap-fastened straps. The roomy lower section gathers into a comfortable diaper-cover shape.
The demonstrated version uses knit fabric and crossed back straps, but the romper can also be sewn in woven cotton.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Read fold-line, size, and print-direction markings.
- Interface and turn the straps and bib sections.
- Sew waist and leg casings and insert elastic.
- Join layered sections neatly at the pointed seams.
- Finish edges with an overlocker or zigzag stitch.
- Position snaps after checking the straps and fit.
Fabric and notions
Choose knit fabric or a lightweight cotton woven. You’ll also need fusible interfacing, elastic for the waist and legs, and snaps.
For knit fabric, the class recommends a ballpoint or stretch needle and a walking foot. An overlocker is optional because the edges can be finished with a zigzag stitch.
Make it your own
Set the back straps straight or crossed. Another option moves the straps to the front so they can tie behind the neck.
Use one fabric throughout, contrast the inner and outer bib, or divide the front and add trim. Fit the snaps to the child, or add two positions when sewing the romper as a gift.
Sizing and fit
The design covers sizes from newborn through 3 years. Elastic lengths vary by size, and the leg openings can be adjusted to the child for a comfortable fit.
