What you’ll make

Sew a baby carrier sling intended for carrying a child on your hip. Its double-layered fabric body connects to adjustable backpack webbing, with a padded shoulder protector for added comfort.

The finished sling measures approximately 41 cm wide by 56 cm high. The one-size pattern states an approximate maximum child-weight range of 9–20 kg.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Assemble and turn the double-layered sling body.
  • Finish polypropylene or cotton webbing to help prevent fraying.
  • Insert and reinforce the webbing with rows and crossed stitching.
  • Sew and finish a batting-filled shoulder protector.
  • Test and stitch openings sized for the chosen webbing.
  • Thread the shoulder protector, buckle, and adjustable strap.

Fabric and materials

Use a sturdy fabric for the sling body; the sample uses canvas. You will also need backpack webbing, a compatible buckle, and batting for the shoulder protector.

The PDF specifies webbing and a buckle in a compatible width of 4 or 5 cm. The class shows how to size the stitched openings for the width you choose.

Make it your own

Use the sling fabric for the padded shoulder protector to create a coordinated finish. Adapt its stitched openings to fit either 4 or 5 cm webbing.
