What you’ll make

Sew a long, roomy raincoat with an adjustable hood, kangaroo pocket and snap-fastened openings at the front and sides.

A deep inverted pleat leaves room for a backpack underneath. In lightweight windbreaker fabric, Aurora also folds compactly for carrying in a bag.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Shape and face the paneled hood.
  • Add reinforced eyelets and an adjustable drawstring.
  • Form the back inverted pleat for backpack room.
  • Construct overlapping front plackets and the optional neck guard.
  • Sew and position the kangaroo pocket.
  • Finish the side openings and install snaps.
  • Make cuff casings with optional elastic.

Fabric and weather protection

Choose a fine waterproof or wind-resistant fabric. The sample uses lightweight Katia Fabrics windbreaker fabric, which keeps this long coat easier to sew, wear and pack.

Avoid very thick softshell, which may feel heavy and make the front details stiff. With thin fabric, reinforce the snap areas and hood eyelets with interfacing.

Water-resistant fabric does not make sewn seams waterproof. The class discusses seam-sealing tape for limiting water penetration through the stitching.

Make it your own

  • Shorten or lengthen the raincoat.
  • Omit the kangaroo pocket or inner neck guard.
  • Leave the cuffs loose or add elastic.
  • Tie the hood cord or add cord locks.
  • Adjust the snap placement to suit the openings.

Sizing and finished length

The loose-fitting pattern has three size bands. Choose from your largest body measurement, or allow more room if you plan to wear the raincoat over a jacket.

  • XS/S: bust 86–102 cm, waist 64–80 cm, hips 90–106 cm; length 107 cm.
  • M: bust 102–118 cm, waist 80–96 cm, hips 106–122 cm; length 110 cm.
  • L/XL: bust 118–134 cm, waist 96–112 cm, hips 122–138 cm; length 113 cm.

The video class is accompanied by Aurora pattern files in A4 and A0 formats, plus an A0 information sheet with the size chart.
