What you’ll make

Create stuffed 3D letters spelling XMAS. Contrasting front and back fabrics and a narrow side panel turn the flat letter shapes into dimensional holiday decorations.

The X and M provide practice with sharp inner and outer corners, while the same approach can be adapted to other words or sewable shapes.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Trace and cut dimensional letter pieces.
  • Join a side strip around complex outlines.
  • Pivot at sharp inner and outer corners.
  • Clip seams so turned corners sit smoothly.
  • Align the second face with the side panel.
  • Stuff the form and close it by hand.

Fabric and structure

Use fabric for the front and back of each letter, plus bias tape or a cut fabric strip for the side panel.

Fiberfill creates a soft decoration. For letters that need enough weight to stand upright or act as doorstops, the class suggests dry rice, seeds, or another suitable heavy filling.

Make it your own

Enlarge the supplied letters, choose another typeface, or create a different word. Changing the width of the side strip changes the depth of the finished letter.

Add a hanging cord, button, pom-pom trim, or another lightweight detail. Larger soft versions can become cushions, while weighted versions can serve as doorstops.

The complete class includes a downloadable XMAS template. Finish the turning opening with the invisible stitch tutorial for a discreet hand-sewn closure.
